OUTDOOR PREPAREDNESS

Are you spending a lot more time outdoors these days?  If you're planning a day trip to hike and take in some of Mother Nature's beauty, here are some must-have items for your backpack.

  • Water

  • Snacks

  • A hat & sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Bug repellent 

  • Umbrella & rain jacket

  • Appropriate & comfortable shoes (eg: hiking boots)

  • First aid kit including mask, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes

  • Cell phone w/ camera

  • Paper trail maps

  • Spare cash

  • Matches

  • A change of clothes 

  • Photo identification

  • Compass

  • Bear spray

  • Multi-tool

  • Whistle

  • Flashlight/batteries

  • NOAA weather radio

  • Necessary medications (EpiPen, inhaler, eye drops, etc)

  • Winter hat, gloves/mittens, scarf, hand warmers, warm socks and a blanket if in cold climate

OTHER TIPS

  • Share your plans with a family member or friend

  • Check your local weather forecast

  • Familiarize yourself with the trail maps

  • Wear the right shoes/boots for the conditions

  • Watch for wildlife

  • Avoid hazards such as ice or uneven terrain

  • Don't litter. Leave only your own footprints
