If you're hitting the road this Independence Day weekend, your biggest travel hazard may not be traffic—it could be the heat.
Much of the eastern half of the country is expected to experience dangerous temperatures during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Extreme heat doesn't just affect your body—it can also impact your vehicle, increasing the risk of breakdowns and tire problems.
Whether you're driving across town or across the country, a little preparation can help keep your holiday safe and stress-free.

Heat-Smart Road Trip Tips
💧 Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of cool water before and during your trip. If you're spending time outdoors or doing any physical activity, beverages with electrolytes can help replace what you lose through sweat. Avoid alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration.
⛽ Keep Your Gas Tank Topped Off
Hot weather and heavy use of your vehicle's air conditioning can reduce fuel efficiency. Keeping your tank at least half full also provides peace of mind if you encounter traffic delays or unexpected detours.
🚗 Check Your Tires
Heat causes the air inside your tires to expand, so check your tire pressure before you leave. Properly inflated tires can improve safety and reduce the risk of a blowout.
🧰 Pack an Emergency Travel Kit
Every vehicle should have an emergency kit that includes:
Bottled water
Non-perishable snacks
First aid kit
Phone charger or power bank
Flashlight
Basic emergency supplies
You hope you'll never need it—but you'll be glad it's there if you do.
🐾 Never Leave Children or Pets in a Parked Vehicle
Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise to deadly levels within minutes. If you can't take them with you when you stop, don't leave them behind.
☀️ Protect Yourself from the Sun
If you'll be outside during your travels:
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen before heading outdoors.
Wear UV-blocking sunglasses and a hat.
Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
Take breaks in the shade or air conditioning whenever possible.
Enjoy the Holiday—Safely
The 4th of July is all about celebrating with family and friends, and this is a special one. Happy 250th Birthday, America!
A few simple precautions can help ensure your holiday memories are made for the right reasons. Plan ahead. Stay cool. Look out for one another.
Have a happy, safe, and healthy 4th of July weekend!
