Aloha from beautiful Oahu, Hawai'i! I had the amazing opportunity to spend time on this stunning island while teaching FEMA classes—and on my free day, I went exploring. I’ve seen a lot of incredible places in my travels, but I have to say: discovering the Spitting Cave of Portlock was hands-down the best stop of my trip.
It wasn’t easy to find (more on that below!), but oh my goodness—it was so worth it. And of course, I took video so you can see this natural wonder for yourself. (Watch on Instagram here 📲).

The Science Behind the “Spit” 🌬️💦
So, what exactly is the Spitting Cave?
This natural phenomenon happens when powerful Pacific Ocean waves crash against Oahu’s rugged south shore cliffs and funnel into underwater lava tubes. The energy builds pressure inside these hollowed-out rock formations until—WHOOSH!—the water forcefully spits back out through the cave’s opening.
Think of it like the island “breathing” with the rhythm of the sea. The pressure, timing, and shape of the rocks all combine to create dramatic bursts of spray that are both thrilling and humbling to watch.

The Geology: Lava Meets Ocean 🌋
Oahu, like the rest of Hawaii, is volcanic in origin. The Spitting Cave is carved into layers of ancient basalt rock, remnants of long-ago lava flows. Over time, the relentless Pacific has eroded the cliffs, forming blowholes, sea caves, and tide-driven channels.
At Portlock, the steep cliffs make for a dramatic setting. The ocean here is deep, powerful, and unpredictable—which is why the water action at the Spitting Cave is so intense. This is not a spot for swimming or cliff-jumping—it’s purely for marveling at nature’s raw beauty (safely from above).

How to Find the Spitting Cave 🗺️
Here’s the catch—it’s tricky to find!
The Spitting Cave is tucked away in a residential neighborhood in Portlock, near Hawaii Kai, on the southeastern shore of Oahu. There aren’t any big signs pointing the way, but if you plug Lumahai Street, Honolulu into your GPS, you’ll get close.
At the end of the street, there’s a discreet public access path between two houses. Follow that down, and after a short walk, you’ll reach the cliffs—and there it is!
⚠️ A word of caution: The path can be uneven and wet, and the cliffs are steep. Wear sturdy shoes, and be careful near the edge. The views are spectacular, but safety first!
Preparing for Your Visit 🎒☀️
If you’re planning to visit:
Wear proper footwear. Flip-flops aren’t your friend here.
Bring water and sun protection. Shade is limited, and Hawaii’s sun is strong year-round.
Be mindful of the cliffs. The ocean is beautiful but powerful—stay a safe distance back.
Time your visit. Late afternoon is great for dramatic lighting, but mornings are cooler if you want to avoid the heat.
Weather at the Spitting Cave 🌤️
Oahu’s southeastern shore enjoys a tropical climate year-round. Expect warm temperatures (typically 75–85°F) with steady trade winds. Summer (May–October) tends to be hotter and drier, while winter (November–April) can bring bigger surf and passing showers.
No matter when you go, the Spitting Cave is mesmerizing—the waves never stop performing their powerful ocean symphony.
Why It Was My Favorite Stop ✨
Out of everything I saw on Oahu, this was the moment that stuck with me most.

Standing on the cliffs, feeling the wind in my hair, and watching the ocean breathe through the cave—it was humbling, energizing, and unforgettable.
Sometimes the hardest places to find end up being the ones that leave the biggest mark. And if you know me, you know I live for these moments—chasing beauty, adventure, and experiences that make life feel full. It’s that spark of wonder that keeps me moving forward, and it’s something I’ll never stop seeking.
